Border Town Markets - Del Rio, TX
Del Rio’s Challenge
Del Rio, Texas, is an oasis in a semi-desert area on the Mexico border. The site of flowing spring waters, Del Rio also boasts proximity to one of the largest inland
bodies of water in Texas, Lake Amistad. But while Del Rio can quench the thirsts of residents and visitors who enjoy fishing and other outdoor activities, these same
people have been parched in terms of shopping and restaurant opportunities.
Del Rio city leaders believe their city, population 35,000, can attract national and regional retailers. In addition to its residents and tourists, Del Rio has the
potential to be a destination for Mexican citizens from nearby Ciudad Acuna.
"We have people crossing the border from Mexico to go to San Antonio (150 miles away) and other cities to shop," says Monique Vernon, economic development
specialist for new and relocating businesses, City of Del Rio. "We also have people coming in to fish and not finding a variety of places to shop and eat."
Buxton’s Solution
The city of Del Rio contracted with Buxton to assess its retail potential. Using its time-proven CommunityID® analysis, Buxton determined the market potential for retail based upon Del Rio’s resident population. The results proved that the Del Rio trade area could support a variety of retail and restaurants.
The Results
Del Rio now boasts a Quiznos, thanks to the efforts of city leaders who used the Buxton data. In addition, another national restaurant company is interested in placing one or more of its company-owned eateries. Before it was given the Buxton data, the corporation
believed that Del Rio’s consumer income was too low to support its concepts.
In addition to restaurants, the future is promising for retail development. "We now have the type of information we need to present to these businesses and the contacts we need to get in touch with them," Vernon says.
