Congratulations to Goff Winkler for winning the 1st Annual Buxton Challenge!
Objective
Teams comprised of 2 - 4 students will have one month to complete the assigned case
study that applies Econometrics in the retail industry. Teams are to decide what they think
is the best solution and prepare a report to convince experts that their solution is the best
one. Teams should consider multiple aspects of the case, decipher information about
alternative data points and build a multivariate regression model. Teams should determine
the factors that explain annual revenue for a retail or restaurant concept and consider
statistical validity and real-world application in the construction of their models. This
competition is intended to be challenging and exciting while introducing students to Econometrics in the retail industry.
Timing
The Buxton Challenge will be held on campuses throughout North and Central
Texas in the spring of 2009. Teams will have one month to complete their analysis. The
winning team from each campus will then compete in the Regional Finals Competition held
at Buxton headquarters later in the Spring Semester.
Teams
Each team must have 2 - 4 members who have taken or are currently enrolled in Econometrics. Members can be undergraduate or graduate students. Each campus may have
multiple teams participate. Faculty mentors are optional.
Prize
The winning team from each campus will receive $1,000 and consideration for the
Regional Finals Competition. Teams chosen as Regional Finalists will present their model
and results to a panel of judges at Buxton corporate offices in Fort Worth, Texas. There,
each team will learn more about how Econometrics applies to the consumer analytics
industry. The winning team at the Regional Final Challenge will be awarded an additional $2,500.
Judging Criteria
The four main categories the judges will consider in determining both the Regional and
Campus winners are as follows:
Statistical Validity
Completeness
Real World Application
Creativity
Teams that compete in the Regional Final Competition will also deliver a presentation that
incorporates all team members and includes a question and answer session. Ancillary
materials are allowed at the presentation.
