Lynchburg, VA: Optimizes Use of Limited Retail Sales

Lynchburg has long served as the regional shopping hub for central Virginia and in order to keep this position, civic leaders needed to become proactive with their retail planning. When analyzing the region, the leaders noticed bordering communities had land resources with plenty of potential for retail build-out.

"We wanted to remain competitive for retail development," said Marjette Glass, director of economic development for the city. "We felt being proactive in lieu of reactive was the best strategy. We decided to hire Buxton because they are the industry leader in consumer analytics and site selection for the retail sector."

Buxton educated the City on what the retail executives look for when deciding on a new location or retaining an existing location. This information enabled the City to make better decisions and optimize the use of their land resources.

Buxton Sees Positive Growth in 2009

Buxton®, the industry leader in customer analytics, announces a solid first half of 2009, signing a total of 49 new clients to date. New client totals by division are 19 retailers and restaurants, 24 public sector entities and 6 healthcare organizations.

“We've had a really strong 2009,” said Charles Wetzel, president and chief operating officer of Buxton. "From the retail side of things, retailers still in the game have realized they aren't going anywhere and it's time to aggressively plan for 2010. Customer analytics has become a top priority for these retailers, recognizing that their customers -both new and prospective - are what's keeping their doors open right now."

During the month of June, more companies inked contracts with Buxton than in any previous month since the company's inception in 1994.

Using Retail Incentives to Achieve Community Goals
Webinar - September 9 at 10:30 CST

Your community has probably been asked by a developer or retailer to provide incentives to secure an expansion or relocation project. These requests for incentives have forced many civic leaders to discuss the use of incentives and to rethink their development strategies. Like them or not, incentives are a part of the site selection process, and for many firms, have dramatically increased in the past 10 years.

Join Buxton for a discussion about the role of incentives in retail development and how they are being used by communities. This webinar is an update of a previous webinar from January 2008. It adds new insight into how communities align incentive policies to achieve their retail goals.
