At Buxton, we’ve worked with hundreds of communities across the country to develop strategies for a proactive retail approach. Like all economic development, retail expansion can be greatly impacted by implementing a sales plan for specific assets, or the community at large. Cities that were once reactive are now actively marketing themselves to the retail universe, much like they have always done for the attraction of manufacturers, corporate headquarters, and other drivers. Jobs, healthcare, retail and restaurant opportunities, education, parks, safety, traffic and a myriad of other things affect quality of life, and can all be impacted by good planning, specific long-term goal setting, and good information.
While taking control of property is not possible for every community, it does speak to the lengths this particular city is willing to take to address their stagnant retail economy. And while this approach doesn’t assure success, they now control the odds.
