Separation of Church and Shopping?

Have you been to a mall lately and noticed the store fronts aren’t necessarily your typical retailers? Over the years I have seen seasonal pop-up stores occupying vacant retail space, but recently there has been a new phenomenon to occupy vacant retail space a little more permanently. In an article in the Daily Finance last week, I read that churches are finding that converting or renovating an old department store seems to make a good sized place of worship.

What I wonder is how this increasing trend will affect the retailers that are in those malls? Will their customer base change? Will they need to change their product mix? Will it increase foot traffic to the retailers still in the malls on a regular basis or just on Sundays?

What do you think?
